Griffith Airport (IATA: GFF) is a council-run regional airport. The council owns and operates it, and it sits 4.3 km from the Griffith CBD. Two airlines serve it, Rex and QantasLink, and both fly to Sydney. Three things changed in 2026 that most guides haven’t caught up with: paid parking is arriving, Qantas is adding Monday and Friday flights, and the terminal still has no café.
We cross-checked council notices, airline pages, aviation data and local reporting to build this guide. Where sources disagreed, we say so.

Flights: What Nobody Tells You
Two Airlines, Different Aircraft
Rex flies Saab 340 turboprops. Qantas has named one of its 78-seat Q400 aircraft “Griffith”. The aircraft type matters for baggage rules and comfort, which we cover below.
New in November 2026: Extra Qantas Flights
Qantas is adding Friday flights (Sydney 6:05 am, Griffith 8:05 am) and Monday flights (Sydney 5 pm, Griffith 6:55 pm). The first Monday service starts 2 November and the first Friday service on 6 November. Frequency counts on aggregator sites ranged from 19 to 38 flights a week in our checks, so treat any single number as a snapshot.
Fares: The Real Range
Headline “from” prices don’t tell the whole story.
| Scenario | Reported Price |
| Rex advertised one-way, Sydney–Griffith | From $239 (lowest sample fare) |
| Qantas return booked in advance | 500–600 for weekend returns; one 6–9 November return listed at $498 |
| Short-notice return (2025 report) | $1,309 on Qantas, $940 on Rex (Sunday–Monday, via Expedia) |
Qantas says fares above $1,000 are rare and mostly happen when few seats remain on short-notice bookings. Our advice: book early, compare both airlines, and don’t assume the cheapest-looking aggregator fare is still available.
Airline Reliability: What Changed
Rex entered administration on 30 July 2024 and stopped capital-city jet routes. Its regional flights, including Griffith, stayed scheduled. Local health groups said many patients rely on Rex because it’s the only airline arriving early in the morning. If your trip is medical or time-critical, check both airlines’ early-morning options.
Parking: Free Today, Paid Soon (Most Guides Say “Free”)
The new boom gates and pay stations entered a two-week test phase in late September 2026, with no charges during testing. Council said it will notify the community before paid parking starts. Check the council’s airport page before you go.
Adopted fees:
| Duration | Fee |
| Up to 60 minutes | Free |
| Hourly rate | $2.50 |
| Per 24 hours | $12.00 |
| Per week | $65.00 |
How it works: Cameras read your number plate, so there’s no ticket. You pay by card at a terminal pay station and have 20 minutes to exit. Hire car operators stay on separate lease agreements.
Why council is doing it: More than 230 vehicles park there on a typical weekday morning, against 158 formal public spaces. Locals have pushed back, and a council-introduced 15-minute free zone near the terminal is for drop-offs and pick-ups.
Getting From Griffith Airport to Town
No public buses or trains serve the airport. Pick one of these before you land.
The Visit Griffith car and bus hire page lists operators, including coach hire for groups.
Baggage on Rex Turboprops: The Rule That Catches People
Rex’s carry-on limit is 7 kg on regional routes. Saab 340 checked baggage is 15 kg on Community, Promo and Saver fares, and 23 kg on Flex. No single bag above 32 kg is accepted. See the official Rex Conditions of Carriage for current terms. For QantasLink, check your booking’s baggage rules.
Terminal Facilities: What’s Actually There
This is where we found a clear mismatch. At least one popular travel guide describes a café and a security screening area at Griffith. Council records tell a different story:
- The mayor said a physical café was explored and judged not viable.
- The terminal has a refrigerated vending machine for cold drinks and snacks.
- Council approved a coffee vending machine in 2026, with no installation date at the time.
- Council lists “proper security screenings” among future upgrades parking revenue should fund.
Bring your own food and water, and confirm screening arrangements with your airline before you travel.

Step-by-Step: A Smooth Griffith Trip
- Compare both airlines. Check Rex and Qantas for your dates. Qantas adds Monday and Friday options from November.
- Check your fare’s baggage allowance. Weigh your carry-on against the 7 kg limit.
- Book your hire car at the same time as your flight. Regional fleets are small.
- Decide where you’ll park. Check the council page to see whether charges have started. Use the 15-minute zone for quick drop-offs.
- Allow buffer time. Heavy fog at Sydney in August 2025 caused cancellations across several airlines, including Rex. Don’t book tight same-day connections.
- Download your booking reference. Don’t count on strong mobile signal.
Weather and Disruption: What to Expect
Disruptions at small airports usually come from outside Griffith. Fog hits Sydney. Griffith itself closed to all aircraft in 2023 after heavy overnight rain and a severe weather warning. In February 2026, a Rex flight bound for Griffith diverted to Parkes after an electrical fault. Rare events, but worth a buffer day for weddings and medical appointments. Live arrivals and delays are on Flightradar24’s Griffith page.
Fly or Drive? A Quick Comparison
